How to make random teams
- Type or paste the names, one per line, up to 5,000.
- Choose Number of teams, or People per team to get as many teams as needed. Just shuffle gives the whole list in random order.
- Press Make teams, or the Space bar or Enter outside a text field. Press again for a new split, and copy the teams to send them to the group.
Even teams, every time
The list is shuffled with the Fisher–Yates algorithm and dealt like cards, so team sizes never differ by more than one. People per team makes as many teams as needed: 10 people in teams of 3 gives four teams of 3, 3, 2 and 2. Every order of the list is equally likely, because the shuffle uses the browser’s cryptographic generator without bias.
It suits PE lessons and five-a-side football, group projects, quiz nights, pairing people for code reviews or a secret gift exchange.
Questions
Can I show the teams on a big screen?
Yes, the full-screen button leaves only the teams and the main button. The link under the result opens the same teams on any device.
Are the names stored anywhere?
Only in this browser, so the list is still there next time. Nothing is sent to a server.
I need just one person.
Use the wheel for a show, or the giveaway picker when the result must be verifiable.
