SmartBench Guide

How to check a used phone or tablet before you buy it

SmartBench tests the hardware of a phone, tablet or laptop right in the browser: display, touchscreen, processor, graphics, speakers, vibration, sensors, battery, microphone, camera, GPS and NFC. Nothing to install on someone else’s phone, which makes it ideal for checking a used device at the meeting point. Here is what to check and how.

How to run a full check

  1. Open SmartBench on the device you are checking. On a computer, scan the QR code on the home screen to open it on the phone.
  2. Press Start full checkup. SmartBench leads you through the tests one by one; each takes from a few seconds to a minute.
  3. After each test, mark it Works or Problem. Measured tests also show numbers, such as processor score or frames per second.
  4. Open the Report to see everything at once. Share it as a link, or save it as a picture, text, JSON or PDF.

The core tests take about five minutes. Do the extra tests if the device will be used for photos, navigation or contactless payments.

What to check, and what a fault looks like

TestWhat to doWarning signs
Displaygo through the full-screen colours, gradients, dark fields and fine linesdots that stay one colour (dead or stuck pixels), light leaking at the edges, blotches, stripes in gradients, a refresh rate lower than advertised
Touchscreendraw with several fingers; swipe over every cell of the gridcells that stay dark (dead zones), broken lines, fewer simultaneous touches than expected
Processorrun the test twice in a rowa score far below similar models, or a big drop on the second run (overheating, throttling)
Graphicslet all four WebGL scenes run to the enda score far below other units of the same model, artefacts or a crash
Vibrationplay short and long patternsrattling, weak or missing vibration
Speakersplay left and right channels, the frequency sweep and low tones, at medium volumea silent channel, crackling, rattling in the body
Gyroscope and accelerometertilt and turn the device, then put it on a flat surfacethe 3D model lags or jumps; the level bubble is off-centre; Z acceleration far from 9.8 m/s²
Batterycheck the charge and charging, then run the load test for a few minutescharging not detected, or the charge dropping very fast under load

Extra tests

  • Microphone: talk or snap your fingers, record 5 seconds and play it back. Check each microphone in the list.
  • Camera: switch between all cameras, check focus, flash and zoom, and look for spots or stripes on the picture.
  • GPS: go outside and measure how fast the device finds its position and how accurate it is.
  • NFC: hold a tag, transit pass or bank card to the back. A working module shows the tag’s serial number; bank card data is never read.
  • About device: model, system, memory, storage, network and supported features. Compare them with the seller’s listing.

Before you pay: what a browser cannot check

SmartBench covers what a web page can reach. Check the rest by hand:

  • Battery health: on iPhone, Settings → Battery → Battery Health; on many Android phones, Settings → Battery or the manufacturer’s care app. Under 80% means a replacement is due soon.
  • Locks: the phone must be signed out of the seller’s Apple ID or Google account and reset, otherwise it may stay locked to them.
  • IMEI: dial *#06#, compare the number with the box and the tray, and check it is not reported lost or stolen.
  • Calls and SIM: insert your SIM card, make a call, and check mobile data and Wi-Fi.
  • Buttons, ports and biometrics: volume and power buttons, the charging port with your cable, Face ID or the fingerprint sensor.
  • Body: dents, a bent frame, a lifted screen (often a swollen battery) and signs of opening or water damage.

Browser support and limits

  • HTTPS is required for sensors, camera, microphone and GPS; fof.lol always uses it.
  • Vibration is not available in Safari on iPhone and iPad.
  • Motion sensors on iPhone need your permission, which SmartBench asks for with a button.
  • Battery details are available only in Chromium browsers (Chrome, Edge, Samsung Internet, Opera).
  • NFC works only in Chrome on Android.

A passed test does not guarantee a part is perfect, and a failed one does not prove a fault: the browser sees only part of the hardware. For warranty or repair decisions, consult a service centre.

Privacy and sharing

All tests run on the device. Photos, recordings, coordinates and results never leave it, and results are stored only in this browser, up to 30 reports. A report link contains the results packed inside the link itself, about 100–130 characters, so the seller can send it to a buyer, or you can keep it as proof of the phone’s condition. Anyone who opens it sees a read-only copy and can save it.

Frequently asked questions

Does SmartBench work on iPhone?

Yes, in Safari and other browsers. Vibration and battery details are not available on iPhone because Safari does not provide them; everything else works.

Can SmartBench show battery health?

No browser can read battery wear directly. The load test measures how fast the charge drops, which hints at a worn battery; check the exact health in the phone’s settings.

How do I find dead pixels?

Open the Display test and look closely at each full-screen colour, especially black, white, red, green and blue. A dot that stays the same colour on every fill is a dead or stuck pixel.

Can I test a laptop or a computer?

Yes. The display, processor, graphics, speakers, microphone and camera tests all work on computers. Touch and motion sensors need a device that has them.

Is my data safe?

Yes. SmartBench has no server side: everything is measured and stored in the browser, and nothing is uploaded.
